How to Configure Your Own VPN Network | VPN server

The first step in creating a VPN network in Windows is to access the Network and Sharing Center on the computer that will act as the VPN server. You can access it from Control Panel .

Next, choose the Network and Internet option, and then choose the Network and Sharing Center option . You can also access it from the Network icon in the system tray, next to the clock.

Now, click Change adapter settings in the side panel.

In the Network Connections window , access the File menu and choose the New incoming connection option . If you do not have the menu bar visible, press the ALT key and they will be shown.

Next, click on the Add someone… button to create a new user for the VPN network . In the box that appears, type a username and set a password. These will be the identification data that your device will ask you for when you want to connect to the VPN network.

When you’re done, tap OK . Continue with Next . Then, check the Over the Internet box and continue with Next.

After this, it will be necessary to restart the computer for the new network to be created. If after the reboot you return to the Change adapter settings window again , you will notice that a new network has been created, which will indicate if there are any users using the VPN network.

Open the ports on your router

So that your router does not block the connection of external devices to your VPN network, it will be necessary to open a specific port, through which this connection will be directed. The port to open will be 1723 TCP .

Each router has a different configuration interface and its own way of opening ports. If you don’t know how to do it, consult the manual of your router or contact the technical support service of your Internet provider.

Connect to your private VPN network from another computer

Once you have configured the VPN network , you have created the user account and you have opened the ports of your router , all you have to do is establish the connection from another computer.

On this occasion, we will use a laptop with Windows 7 and connected to the Internet from an open network.

Access the Network and Sharing Center , as we have shown in the previous section. Next, click on the Set up a new network connection option. Then, choose the option Connect to a work area and click on Next .

Now, choose Use my Internet connection (VPN) and configure the connection parameters. In Internet address , type the static IP of your router or the domain that you created in No-ip.

Next, type in the username and password you created during the VPN setup in the previous section and click Connect . After a few seconds, the connection to the VPN network will be established.

Open the door to the Internet

After connecting to your private VPN network , you may still not have an Internet connection. That’s because you’re trying to use the wrong internet gateway.

To solve it, click on the Network icon in the system tray and display the list of available networks. Among them you will find your VPN network.

Then right-click on it and choose Properties . Access the Network functions tab , select the Internet Protocol version 4 (TPC/IPv4) option and click on the Properties button .

In the next box, click on Advanced Options . Now, uncheck the Use the default gateway on the remote network box and click OK on all the above boxes until they close.

Reboot your computer. You will now be able to reconnect to your VPN, from the Network icon in the system tray. After entering your username and password, you will connect to your VPN network again and you will be able to navigate totally safe and maintaining your privacy.
